In the Asper School of Business’ management PhD program, students are mentored in their research practice and in the development of teaching skills. Asper PhD graduates go on to fulfill the increasing need for Canadian-trained management academics.

?Throughout their doctoral studies, students are engaged in research apprenticeships with the faculty. Students are assured of working with faculty members on several projects during their program and are required to spend a specific number of hours per week working for a faculty member during the term and in the summer. In this way, students are assured of receiving hands-on experience with the research process.

    The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the PhD in management program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

    Those applying to the Asper PhD in management program should possess:

    1. Either:
    • an earned Master's degree, or
    • an earned Bachelor's degree with Honours (or its identifiable equivalent) from a recognized institution in a management, business, or a cognate or foundational disciplinary area (i.e.: psychology, sociology, economics, or mathematics);
    1. A minimum 600 GMAT score (or GRE equivalent);
    2. English Language Test score, where applicable
    3. Three letters of reference
    4. Appropriate research interest and capability as evidenced by a statement of purpose; and,
    5. In addition to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies minimum requirements, the following may be submitted:
    6. A thesis from a recognized institution;
    7. A major research paper from a recognized institution;
    8. An independently completed research article published in a refereed journal;
    9. An independently completed research working paper presented at a conference; and/or
    10. Other evidence of an appropriate nature, such as written class research projects and term papers.

    Additional Information:

    Master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B or equivalent) in the last two previous years of full time study (60 credit hours) is the minimum requirement for admission to the PhD program. With special recommendation of the department, exceptional applicants with an honours bachelor’s degree may be considered for entry to PhD study. 

    Test Scores:
    • International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 600] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment or Pearson Test of English (Academic) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based)
    Application Notes :

    The GRE will be accepted with a mean percentile score across the three areas similar to the current acceptable percentile level of the GMAT. CanTest, CAEL (60) and AEPUCE (65%) are also accepted for English language proficiency requirements. Please see website for complete details.
